about

David Jones, the great Modernist poet and artist, was born and bred in the area of South East London where I live ... although partly of Welsh parentage, this is where he grew up and this is where he returned ... he is buried in a family plot in Ladywell and Brockley Cemetery. He died 28 October, 1974. At around 9.10 AM, 28 October, 2011 I stood by the grave, one I had visited frequently, and photographed it ... it was, by happenstance, a Friday morning. I was there at that time because my daughter’s school was adjacent to the cemetery and that’s how long, more or less, it took me to walk to the grave upon taking leave of her. I had embarked on a project to do this, the same time every week, for a year. 52 photos, 52 Friday mornings. I could have chosen the day of Jones’ birth, 1 November, but that fell on a Tuesday this particular year and 52 Tuesday Mornings just doesn't promise the same sense of adventure or mystery, no?
The basis of this track is a sound recording I made at the graveside - the ambient sound of the cemetery ... birds (a lot of crows, always, in this cemetery ... magpies too, although they don’t tend to call as insistently as their cousins ... green parakeets, although not on this particular morning), workmen, distant traffic, etc. ...
